global furniture e-tailer:
from conception to cgi reality
It wasn’t just the pandemic—it was economic reality, too. Traditional photos shoots are time-consuming, expensive and tough to execute. When the pandemic hit, they became impossible. Read how Adnet helped a global brand to keep working amidst a pandemic, change the way they worked, and grow their business.
This is how we live now. We spot a great-looking sofa online. As we scroll down, we find dining room sets, matching floor lamps and rugs. We land on a brand-new home-office setup. So, enticing. All perfectly arranged and lit. Real life made so appealing.
The logistics of traditional photo shoots
Now imagine the world’s largest brands managing the logistics of constantly shipping all those items from manufacturers around the globe to the world’s best photo studios. Consider the crews, the set building, the shooting days necessary, the lighting needed to convey reality. Add in possible reshoots, distributing the images, and returning the products. On a good day, the logistics of a furniture photo shoot are complex, costly and mind-boggling. The best photo studios are genuinely amazing. Many now incorporate CGI backgrounds into their work. They perform brilliantly under nearly impossible conditions. But this process still can take months. In the middle of a global pandemic, much of this is impossible.
3D digital assets - how we’re helping global brands
Our long-term client is a global online furniture retailer. The pandemic had closed photo studios so they could no longer shoot product. But they were determined to keep working. So, they asked if we could help them create virtual products — couches, lamps, coffee tables, rugs, kitchenware and more — from scratch.
We’d already been working with our client on everyday retouching and clipping—so we knew the product line. Our CGI teams put a proposal together for a seven-person team of CGI subject matter experts. The team would use renderings and even smart phone photographs to create assets from all angles to allow for the creation of 3D digital replicas. We would create utterly realistic looking furniture that, unlike the real world, could be used multiple times over. We had to create each product with extraordinary precision to convey size, shape, scale, color, and texture. We created these digital assets in various platforms, allowing our client the greatest flexibility possible, making it easier for them to work with multiple resellers.
Each object would have to fit into various sets and lighting arrangements. For example, sometimes we see a sofa from the front, the side, or from behind. The lighting may be coming from the right side of the room or the left. The quality of the light can shift the color of the product. Our teams created extensive libraries of the client’s 3D CGI assets (the coffee table, the couch, the lamp, the bed, etc.) all seen from multiple perspectives, all lit from different angles. Adnet’s CGI teams helped with modeling, too—the creation of the virtual set that the furniture we were digitally creating would appear in.
Create, manage, ship
Our client went from an onerous, nearly 4-week, dozen step process, to something that took a week. From beginning to end, the process had about a half-dozen steps to it. By looking to us to staff this project, our client saved on ramp-up time and expenses and was able to hit the ground running. Our teams are proud that we were able to support our client in a difficult moment. We had the skill set, the teams, and the technology to create the digital assets the client needed, manage them, and get them to the next team; a group of designers who would put it all together and get it ready for an online marketplace.
